Quando un bravissimo ghostwriter britannico accetta di completare le memorie dell'ex Primo Ministro britannico Adam Lang, il suo agente gli assicura che è l'occasione della vita. Ma il progetto sembra maledetto fin dall'inizio, quantomeno perché il suo predecessore, storico assistente di Lang, è morto in uno sventurato incidente. Il ghostwriter, nel bel mezzo dell'inverno, parte per raggiungere il Premier in una casa sull'oceano, in un'isola sulla costa orientale degli Stati Uniti. Ma il giorno del suo arrivo, un ex ministro del Gabinetto britannico accusa Lang di aver autorizzato la cattura illegale di sospetti terroristi e di averli così consegnati alla tortura della CIA, un crimine di guerra. Lo scandalo porta stampa e manifestanti intorno alla dimora in cui Lang risiede con la moglie Ruth e con l'assistente personale, nonché amante, Amelia. Mentre lavora, il ghostwriter scopre che il suo predecessore potrebbe essersi imbattuto in un segreto oscuro che collegava Lang alla CIA e che forse qualcosa si nasconde nel manoscritto che ha lasciato. Lang era al servizio dell'agenzia di intelligence americana mentre era Primo Ministro? E il predecessore del ghostwriter non è morto in un incidente, ma è stato ucciso per la sconvolgente verità che aveva scoperto?
