Il giovane Tsane vive con il nonno e la mucca Cvetka su una remota collina. Quando il nonno avverte di essere arrivato agli ultimi giorni della sua vita, chiede al nipote di onorare tre promesse: Tsane deve recarsi nella città più vicina e vendere la mucca al mercato, poi, con i soldi ricavati, deve comprare un'icona religiosa e qualche cosa che desidera veramente per sé. In ultimo, deve trovare una moglie e tornare a casa con lei prima della morte dell'anziano parente. Il giovane riesce a mantenere le prime due promesse, ma la terza sembra veramente difficile da rispettare. Finché, un giorno, Tsane incontra Jasna.
