Dopo sette anni passati in prigione Mario Diccara è libero. Non avendo regolato tutti i suoi conti con la malavita, chiede alla sola persona di cui si fida, suo fratello Patrick, di trovargli un nascondiglio dove rimettersi in sesto per qualche tempo. Patrick, che è un prete, gli suggerisce di raggiungere Padre Etienne in un paesino dell'Ardèche. Mario indossa una tunica da prete e si mette in viaggio. Ma al suo arrivo incominciano le noie: Padre Etienne è da poco morto e gli abitanti del paesino pensano che Mario sia il nuovo parroco...
