Trama

In un futuro non troppo lontano la nanotecnologia ha fatto passi da gigante e consente al magnate della multinazionale MARS di vendere armi ai governi e contemporaneamente fornire le tecnologie di difesa da quelle armi, controllando così di fatto il mercato. Lo scoprono ben presto due soldati semplici attaccati mentre trasportano pericolose testate della MARS. L'unico rimedio lo offre una divisione militare segreta, i G.I. Joe: soldati altamente qualificati impiegati dal governo per missioni semi impossibili. Con loro tenteranno di impedire alla società di poter ricattare tutti i governi del mondo.
Dopo due film sui Transformers la Hasbro decide di ridare vita ad un'altra linea di giocattoli originariamente nata come parte di una strategia patriottica per fomentare il fronte interno riguardo la guerra in Vietnam e già riportata in vita con successo una volta all'inizio degli anni '80 grazie ad una serie animata per la televisione. Anche per questo infatti i soldatini arrivano al cinema non trascurando le origini nazionaliste.
Nel film di Stephen Sommers il nemico non è la guerra in sé, com'è ormai consuetudine nel cinema d'intrattenimento contemporaneo, essa è data per scontata anche perché i buoni sono una squadra speciale che con la guerra ci vive. Proprio come negli anni '60 il male sembra invece nascere dalla scienza militare, mentre la parte positiva del sistema battagliero sono i soldati, tanto che se i buoni sono guerriglieri scelti e superaddestrati come macchine i cattivi sono uomini ridotti al grado di robot da una tecnologia futuribile.
Più in generale però l'idea sembra essere quella di replicare la strategia vincente del film sui robottoni che si trasformano: realizzare un blockbuster fracassone dall'animo ironico che sappia distrarre i bambini con i botti, divertire i ragazzi con la comicità cinica, emozionare le ragazze con il sentimentalismo e intrattenere gli adulti con i corpi esibiti.
Ma se l'esperimento di Michael Bay era insperatamente riuscito nell'impresa di convincere un po' tutti quest'opera diretta dall'insipido Sommers sembra più la sua copia sbiadita, dotata delle medesime caratteristiche (che poi da sempre sono la cifra del regista di La mummia) senza però avere la potenza visiva di Bay.
Sfrenato e dissennato, G.I. Joe racconta una trama esile esile, focalizzandosi molto sulla ricostruzione delle storie personali dei singoli personaggi, creando un universo nel quale muoverli (dotato di tecnologie futuribili e organizzazioni multinazionali) e facendo culminare il racconto con la definitiva strutturazione dei due poli: da una parte l'asse del male e dall'altra i protagonisti che diventano dei "Joe". Si crea insomma il presupposto per i prossimi film, con tanto di cliffhanger finale che introduce e annuncia il secondo capitolo.
A mancare totalmente purtroppo è quel senso di "cool" tanto inseguito dal regista. Le battutine ad effetto durante le scene d'azione sono trite, i personaggi che dovrebbero essere i più desiderabili sono bamboccioni all'americana o stereotipi della cultura afroamericana mentre tutto il complesso di armi e gadget intorno ai personaggi suona giocattoloso (che forse è la cosa più appropriata) senza quell'appeal che dovrebbe e vorrebbe avere.

Plot

In the near future, weapons expert James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) has created a nanotechnology-based weapon capable of destroying an entire city. His company M.A.R.S. sells four warheads to NATO, and NATO troops are tasked with delivering the warheads. Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) are delivering the warheads when they are ambushed by the Baroness (Sienna Miller), whom Duke recognizes to be his ex-fiancee Ana Lewis. Duke and Ripcord are rescued by Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Snake Eyes (Ray Park), Breaker (Saïd Taghmaoui) and Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). They take the warheads to The Pit, G.I. Joe's command center in Egypt, and upon arriving rendezvous with the head of the G.I. Joe Team, General Hawk (Dennis Quaid). Hawk takes command of the warheads and excuses Duke and Ripcord, only to be convinced to let them join his group after Duke reveals that he knows the Baroness.
McCullen is revealed to be using the same nanotechnology to build an army of soldiers with the aid of the Doctor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), planning on using the warheads to cause panic and bring about a new world order. Using a tracking device, McCullen locates the G.I. Joe Base and sends Storm Shadow (Byung-Hun Lee) and the Baroness to retrieve the warheads with assistance from Zartan (Arnold Vosloo). After a fight, Storm Shadow and the Baroness retrieve the warheads and take them to Baron DeCobray, the Baroness's husband, for him to weaponize. Making their way to Paris, the Joes pursue the Baroness and Storm Shadow but are unsuccessful in stopping them from launching the missile. The nanomites destroy the Eiffel Tower and some of the surrounding area before Duke manages to hit the kill switch, but in doing so is captured and taken to McCullen's base under the Arctic.
The Joes locate the secret base and fly there as McCullen loads three missiles with nano-mite warheads. After Snake Eyes takes out one, Ripcord pursues the remaining missiles in a stolen M.A.R.S. prototype Night Raven jet while Scarlett, Breaker, and Snake Eyes infiltrate the base. Snake Eyes duels and prevails over Storm Shadow. Duke learns that the Doctor is Rex Lewis, Ana's brother believed to have been killed by a mistimed airstrike during a mission led by Duke - also the origin of the alienation between Duke & Ana. Rex had encountered Doctor Mindbender (Kevin O'Connor) in the bunker and was seduced by the nanomite technology, taking too long to retrieve the data and getting caught in the bombing which disfigured him. After freeing Duke, the Baroness gets subdued as the Doctor reveals he has implanted her with nanomites which has put her under his control for the past four years. Attempting to kill Duke, McCullen ends up being burned, so he and the Doctor flee to an escape vessel. Duke and the Baroness pursue him while the Joes fall back when the Doctor activates the base's self destruct sequence.
The Doctor assumes the identity of the Commander, having healed McCullen's burned face with nanomites, encasing it in silver and naming him "Destro", which places McCullen under the Commander's control. They are captured by G.I. Joe soon after. On the supercarrier USS Flagg, the Baroness is placed in protective custody until they can remove the nanomites from her body. Meanwhile, Zartan, having had his physical appearance altered by nanomites, infiltrates the White House during the missile crisis and assumes the identity of the President of the United States of America (Jonathan Pryce).

Azione e adrenalina pura per questo fantastico action movie firmato Stephen Sommers, vi terrà col fiato sospeso dalla prima all'ultima scena.
Come spesso accade per fil tratti da fumetti, all'inizio lo scetticismo è alle stelle, vedi Iron man, Hulk, I fantastici 4 e così via, le varie critiche internazionali li cassano prima ancora che escano, ma poi, i botteghini non mentono, incassi da record, pubblico entusiasta, e non solo bambini o adolescenti, ma nache genitori e adulti, e, la prova del 9, le donne che, come risaputo, non amano certi film.
Guardatevelo e ditemi, in tutta onestà, cosa ne pensate, guardatelo in quyesto formato se volete vedere i pregi e, perchè no, i difetti del film.
Mi raccomando, non mi stancherò mai di scriverlo, godetevelo ma fatelo godere anche agli altri rimanendo in seed il piu possibile, anche con poca banda, ma non abbandonatelo subito. So di poter contare su di voi, grazie.
