Trama

Sara è una madre provata dalla vita. Il marito ha dei problemi con l'alcol e il figlio maschio, Matt, è affetto da un cancro per il quale necessita di cure speciali. La famiglia decide di affittare una casa nella zona vicina all'ospedale in cui Matt viene sottoposto a terapie particolari. Ben presto il ragazzo comincia a percepire strane presenze per combattere le quali chiede l'intervento di un misterioso compagno di terapie esperto in fenomeni paranormali.
Siamo di fronte all'ennesimo film sulla casa infestata di cui Amityville Horror costituisce il punto di riferimento. Il problema è che si vuole far passare la storia come vera. Si tratterebbe del caso della famiglia Snedeker che negli anni '70 aveva finito con l'abitare a Southington in Connecticut.
Può darsi che si siano verificati fenomeni paranormali ma viene da pensare che sia molto improbabile che sia accaduto 'tutto' quello che viene proposto nel film. Perché altrimenti saremmo indotti a ritenere che la famiglia di Matt dovesse essere davvero priva di discernimento visto che non ha abbandonato l'edificio prima della tregenda (di cui vi taciamo le origini e gli sviluppi per non fare spoiler). Il problema di un film come questo sta nella quasi meccanica proposta di nuovi colpi di scena. Tre pugni ben assestati al plesso solare (come ben sanno i pugili) producono molto di più di tanti piccoli pugni ad effetto ma di scarsa potenza complessiva.
Il vero interesse de Il Messaggero non sta quindi tanto nella riproposizione di situazioni ormai stranote agli appassionati del genere. È possibile invece individuarlo nel legame che viene instaurato tra la malattia, la probabile e imminente morte e la sua rappresentazione secondo i canoni del genere. Quei corpi ricoperti di parole da un sadico negromante non sono poi tanto diversi da quello di Matt punteggiato dai segni del male che lo invade.

Plot

Set in 1987, the story centers on Matthew Campbell (Kyle Gallner), who is being treated for cancer in a hospital in Connecticut. After seeing the effect the long commute has on Matt, his family rents a nearby house, which they learn was previously a funeral home. They discover a mortuary room in the basement and the family begins experiencing violent and supernatural events that the parents initially blame on stress and hallucinations from Matt's treatment. Matt also experiences visions from the perspective of a young teenager from the 1920s named Jonah (Erik Berg). Matt contacts a minister he met at the hospital for assistance with his paranormal experiences. He informs Matt that the visions and supernatural encounters are likely a result of the previous occupant's occult activities (including séances and necromancy). The Jonah character is discovered to be the ghost of a psychic medium involved in the previous owner's activities and presently bound to control the "spirits" within the house.
Jonah was used to manifest a large amount of spectral power that exploded, killing several visitors who requested the seance along with the original owner, who warns Jonah that 'they' will come for him next. Jonah flees as newly manifested spirits begin to seal every door in the house, forcing him upstairs and into a dumwaitor that takes him down to the basement. Shut in the dark and cramped dumwaitor, Jonah notices an opening next to him and crawls in, only to be sealed into the furnace and burned alive.
The film comes to its climax when Matt learns the source of the haunting and tries to rid the house of the undesired spirits by burning the bodies of the spirits. In the end, after his mother runs into the house and holds Matt crying, the spirits onlooking Matt disappear. Eventually getting rescued by the firemen, Matt awakes from being unconscious to healthy and unable to see the dead anymore. As the movie ends, a shot of a gutter is shown, with the ashes of the bodies washing into it.
