Nel borgo alpestre di Stella, a ridosso di una grande diga, sul confine carnico, fiorisce, alternando tenerezze e contrasti, l'idillio di Pieri e della giovanissima Gemma. La seconda guerra mondiale priva il paese degli uomini, che vengono richiamati alle armi: viene l'ora del richiamo anche per Pieri e per il di lui fratello Olinto, che deve lasciare la moglie e il figlioletto. Un bombardamento uccide il padre di Gemma: i genitori di Pieri accolgono nella loro casa la fanciulla, rimasta sola al mondo. Pieri ed Olinto sono sorpresi dall'armistizio in Albania: decisi a non arrendersi, a rientrare in Patria, intraprendono con un manipolo d'audaci una lunga marcia attraverso la Iugoslavia. Dopo molti stenti, il gruppo, assottigliato per la morte d'alcuni compagni, tra i quali Olinto, raggiunge infine l'agognata meta. Abbracciati i genitori e Gemma, Pieri si rifugia con i superstiti d'Albania e con nuovi compagni, sul Guia, dove attendono l'ora della riscossa e della liberazione. Quando i tedeschi in fuga decidono di far saltare la diga, che sovrasta il paese, Pieri e i suoi, con un audacissimo attacco, riescono ad impedirlo. Gemma è ferita gravemente da un cosacco: un matrimonio in extremis verrà a suggellare l'amore, che la unisce a Pieri. Contro ogni previsione, Gemma sopravvive miracolosamente: un lieto e pacifico avvenire sorride ormai agli sposi.

In the alpine village of Stella, behind a large dam on the border Carnian, flowers, alternating between tenderness and contrasts, and the romance of the young Gemma Pieri. The Second World War deprived the country of men who are called to arms: it's time for the recall and the Pieri's brother Olinto, who must leave his wife and son. A bombing kills the father of Gemma: Pieri's parents welcome in their house the girl was left alone in the world. Pieri and Olinto are surprised by the armistice in Albania: determined not to surrender, to return home, attend a handful of daring a long march through Yugoslavia. After many hardships, the group thinned to the death of some friends, including Olynthus, finally reaching the coveted goal. Parents hugged and Gemma Pieri flees with the survivors of Albania and with new friends on the Guia, where the waiting time of rescue and liberation. When the fleeing Germans decide to blow up the dam, which overlooks the village, Pierce and his men, with an audacious attack, unable to prevent it. Gemma is seriously injured by a Cossack: a marriage in extremis will to seal their love, which binds to Pieri. Against all odds, miraculously survives Gemma: a happy and peaceful place now smiles to the spouses.
